Brutal KimpactDerby Name: Brutal Kimpact

How did you find out about roller derby?
Pretty sure it was waaay back when Whip It first came out… I hadn’t realized until then that derby had made a comeback. My grandpa use to play back in the ’60s.

What kind of skating skills or athletic experience did you have before starting derby?
I was certainly not an athlete at any point. I grew up riding my bike and roller blading but nothing fancy. And there was that one time I rode my bike across the country. It sounds impressive, but really it just means that I’m stubborn and like a good challenge. Even when your legs want to fall off, you just keep pedaling. (Or skating, when it comes to derby.)

How did you chose your derby name?
Just playing around with words, seeing how I could transform my name (Kim) into something else.

What is your primary position?
I’m a blocker all the way. I’ll jam if asked, but it’s not pretty. Unless you need a bulldozer, then I might be your lady.

What is your greatest strength as a skater?
I’m usually pretty solid and can absorb a good hit.

What do you contribute most to the team?
I haven’t a clue. I like to play personal cheerleader when it comes to a bout. I can usually tell when my teammates are getting down on themselves, and I like to cheer them up if I can.

What has been your greatest experience on the track?
Every bout is a great experience, I love being part of my team. I guess there was that one time I went for an apex jump- I didn’t stick the landing, but I went for it, and that was a big deal. I’m terrified of big jumps like that!

What are you looking forward to the most this season?
Hopefully being here all season! Last season was cut short due to work, and my 2016 season was short due to surgery. I hate short seasons.

What do you contribute to GRG off the track?
I participate in our merchandise and training committees.

What do you do in the non-derby part of your life?
I just graduated from MSU in December with my second bachelor’s. I currently do work mapping and monitoring wildfires throughout the US. Last year was crazy, I’m hoping this fire season isn’t any worse.

If you could have any super power what would it be?
I think I’d like to breathe underwater. Mermaid life.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give people interested in playing roller derby?
Just do it. Maybe it won’t be your cup of tea, and that’s ok! At least you tried. Life should be filled with lots of adventures, and you won’t know if you don’t take a chance.
